Phnom Penh, Cambodia - As the nation celebrated the Water Festival on November 22, a sudden stampede tragically took the lives of 345 people and injured 750 more. The Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE and the Phnom Penh Church of Christ, a partner of HOPE worldwide, responded immediately by bringing food and help to the victims.

Grace Henry of the Sihanouk Hospital Center decided we should all do something to help and before long everyone was on board. She and a few others made phone calls to get donations from local businesses and people and by 6 PM we had 1,000 meals, 1,000+ bottles of water and plenty of masks, gloves and hand sanitizer ready to go to the three largest government hospitals in the city. We are also delivering 1,000+ free meals and water to the same places tomorrow both for lunch and dinner.
The SHCH was able to send some supplies, medicines and doctors to the government hospital adjacent to us. Based on the body bags used (supplied by an NGO we work with) the death count may be as high as twice the number reported so far.
The meals were received with gratitude and it will be good to go out again tomorrow and provide more of them.
